NJPW annual attendance trends, 2016-2023

New Japan Pro Wrestling events in these charts are separated into two categories, “Domestic” (those taking place in Japan) and “Int’l” (those taking place outside of Japan, which includes the U.S., U.K., Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, and Taiwan).

To get a cleaner sense of how New Japan’s business is performing, any events that were co-promoted with other wrestling companies were excluded. This includes events co-promoted with AEW, Ring of Honor, NOAH, and Stardom. This was determined by querying only for events in the cagematch.net database that belonged to New Japan as the sole promotion.

Covid-19 restrictions on live events affected those in Japan for a longer period than other countries like the U.S. Not only were there capacity restrictions but until 2023, there also restrictions on cheering that may have additionally affected attendance.

Most attendance data here was ultimately sourced from New Japan’s official website, via the cagematch.net database. Some data from international events was sourced from WrestleTix estimates.

To repeat the note from our update yesterday on Wrestle Kingdom attendance, New Japan is believed to have started announcing accurate attendances on its official website beginning in mid-2015. I tend to believe these numbers reflect tickets distributed (sales plus comps).
