There are 483 matches here. They’re listed in chronological order.
There are some constraints. I wanted a diversity of matches. So I built in a rule that the program couldn’t pick a match with a given wrestler more than once a year. So for example, you can only pick one Ric Flair match from 1989, only one Kazuchika Okada match from 2017, and so on.
I limited the selection to ten matches per year. For many of the earlier years, there are less than ten — or none.
I also forced the program to pick at least one match from Mexico for each year, if there were any rated matches on Cagematch from the country. I did this with the hope I will earn respect from luchablog.
I based this exercise entirely on Cagematch.net data, favoring matches that were either highly rated or had a high number of votes in the database, which I’m sure will allow some to find issues here. Yes, the earlier decades are under-represented because there aren’t many matches from those decades rated on Cagematch, despite a decent amount of video freely available from the 1950s and 1960s. World of Sport matches from the UK in the 1970s and 1980s are criminally not represented at all, I think for the same reason; there aren’t many (any?) rated.
Focusing on the number of votes as well as high ratings allowed matches like Rock vs. Hulk Hogan and Ultimate Warrior vs. Hulk Hogan to be included which wouldn’t have been included if rating alone, and not votes, were the driving metric. I guess I wanted a selection of matches that was more representative of wrestling history than just what was acclaimed by connoisseurs of match quality.
To be clear, because everyone is thinking about artificial intelligence today, this isn’t AI. I didn’t use AI to do this, except that I did use ChatGPT or Gemini to help me write code, which I always do. But there was no AI used in the selection of the matches. The arbitrary conditions that selected the matches were defined by my own organic brain.
Then I wrote functions that would try to find YouTube links, if they exist, for some of these matches. And with some reliability, it did. I used the match information from Cagematch to run a search on YouTube and then tried to extract a date from the video info and confirm it, or verify the event name and match participants in the video info based on a similarity test. Some of these embedded videos might be accidentally linked to things that aren’t the actual match, and if so, I apologize. Except for the link to WH Park’s show about the Jushin Liger-Shinjiro Otani match from 1998; I left that in on purpose.
