WWE Raw on Netflix is probably being watched by about the same number of viewers as it was on cable

Estimated WWE Monday Night Raw U.S. viewership on Netflix

Total viewers (P2+), live+same-day

The methodology for this estimate is detailed at the bottom of this article.

Our estimates suggest that WWE Monday Night Raw’s U.S. viewership on Netflix is roughly in line with what it drew on the USA Network last year. In sports media and among analysts, though, there’s some confusion about just what Raw’s audience is and just what to compare it to.

Netflix’s acquisition of rights to WWE Raw since the new year has led to a range of interpretations about the show’s performance. Some view the audience as underwhelming given Netflix’s scale. Others see Raw performing well, purportedly far more views than it did on USA Network. Some of the confusion comes from mixing global and U.S. data, some of it comes from incorrectly assuming that viewership for the heavily-promoted premiere has been the norm for subsequent episodes.

In sports media, John Ourand of Puck last week called Raw’s performance on Netflix a “painful reminder” that not all content finds a “Netflix-sized audience.” He pointed to Netflix’s global data, noting—correctly—that Raw is averaging just over 3 million global households per week, albeit through a seven-day window. Ourand wrote that that’s down from 4.9 million for the premiere. But the like-to-like comparison in this case is the 5.9 million global views that Netflix reported the premiere accumulated through seven days. 4.9 million was the live+same-day figure. In any case, one of Ourand’s takeaways was that Raw’s performance is “another data point indicating that a larger platform doesn’t automatically increase demand for a sport by an exorbitant multiple.”

If the suggestion is that Netflix is opening WWE up to a new global audience, it’s important to remember that WWE has been distributed around much of the world for decades. And there’s a good chance WWE itself lacks—let alone the rest of us in the public—all the international data that would be needed to make meaningful comparisons to WWE’s global viewership on Netflix. In many regions, for sure, Netflix was a big step up from the previous platform. And even in the U.S., moving from the USA Network—now in about 65 million households—to Netflix, with around 70 million subscribers, expands WWE’s reach.

LightShed analyst Rich Greenfield countered Ourand’s commentary, saying that Raw’s Netflix viewership is 2x what it was on the USA Network, though, not even TKO President & COO Mark Shapiro is claiming that. For the premiere that was true; not for the typical Raw on Netflix since.

WWE Monday Night Raw: U.S. household viewership, live+same-day

Shapiro said on WWE’s parent company’s Feb. 26 earnings call that Raw was up 13% compared to USA Network’s first quarter viewership last year.

WWE’s Raw is even if you take out the premiere episode… we’re up 13% from our 2024 Q1 average on USA Network. So, we’re seeing great take-up on Netflix with Raw. And at the same time, you have to believe we’re getting some sampling, so we’re getting some new audience. And when I talk about that increase in ratings, keep in mind, that’s an apples-to-apples. I mean that’s based on views. Total viewed minutes divided by run time, so [it’s] similar to Nielsen’s average audience delivery as to how they report across linear exhibitions. This is the most apples-to-apples way to compare.

Raw on Netflix isn’t a massive success, but it’s not failing either. It’s ranked well within the top 10 among all Netflix TV shows each week, in both the U.S. and worldwide.

Raw being watched by about the same number of viewers in the U.S. who were watching on cable reinforces the old wisdom that wrestling audiences are remarkably consistent; fans generally find their favorite weekly wrestling shows wherever they might be.

If there’s a lesson so far in Raw’s move from USA to Netflix, it’s that Netflix—despite its growing household reach—is, for now, only about as strong as cable for live viewing. And it’s definitely not broadcast. Netflix hasn’t put up broadcast-like numbers for its NFL telecasts, and when Smackdown moved from cable to Fox—and more recently back to cable—it was clear how much a strong broadcast network can make a difference. Smackdown on Fox toward the end averaged about 2.2 million viewers; on USA it’s been averaging between 1.5 million. Even NXT is still growing year-over-year after moving to a lower-profile broadcast network, CW.

Top 10,000 most-viewed primetime telecasts of 2024

Nielsen data here was sourced from daily reports from Programming Insider and SpoilerTV. This table shows broadcast and cable telecasts in primetime only, sorted by P18-49 viewership for the calendar year of 2024. Telecasts under 30 minutes were excluded. Any simulcasts weren’t consolidated. This is also limited to the data I could gather from PI and STV. Spanish language broadcast telecasts (e.g., Univision, Telemundo), are usually not included in those reports and would rank here if they were available.

WWE, AEW, and UFC telecasts are shaded to stand out. This should provide some insight into where those companies’ programs stand in the wider landscape of television in a given year. It’s worth noting this is only about one seventh of the entire dataset we have for 2024.

Which AEW events had attendance 10,000 or greater

AEW Revolution 2025 on Sunday night was the promotion’s 26th event with an attendance of 10,000 or higher by our count. The latest estimate from WrestleTix has the event at 11,425 tickets distributed.

Attendance for AEW TV events have struggled — with Dynamite and Collision are averaging under 3,000 this quarter — but attendance for peak events like pay-per-views has been stronger.

There are different types of attendance measurements, which the chart here shows. Most of this data is sourced from WrestleTix, which estimates tickets distributed (sales plus comps) based on the ticketing map. Other data reflects actual tickets sales, sourced from Pollstar or obtained by Wrestlenomics through public records requests (like last year’s Revolution). In the case of All In 2023, we have AEW’s own announced ticket sales number. And in a few cases we have the scan count of tickets used, also sourced from public records requests.

Janel Grant argues against WWE and Vince McMahon’s attempt to block amended lawsuit

Janel Grant filed a reply brief on Friday, pushing back against arguments by defendants Vince McMahon, WWE, and John Laurinaitis to block her amended complaint, which adds to her allegations of sexual abuse and trafficking which the defendants deny.

The latest filing from Grant, who was a WWE employee at the time of the alleged abuse, argues that the federal district court in Connecticut should allow the expanded version of her lawsuit to be the one litigated. Developments that have emerged since her original filing in January 2024, should be considered, she says. That includes the Securities and Exchange Commission’s findings that McMahon engaged in — what Grant characterizes as — a scheme to conceal misconduct.

McMahon and WWE each filed on February 21 their oppositions to Grant’s motion to amend her complaint. Filings from Laurinaitis indicate he’s in agreement with McMahon. The defendants argued that Grant is misusing the court to generate publicity. In Friday’s filing, Grant rejected their claims, asserting that she initially withheld certain details — including the names of high-ranking WWE executives, including company President Nick Khan, who she alleges enabled McMahon — out of concern for an active criminal investigation into McMahon by the federal prosecutors. Executives other than McMahon and Laurinaitis are not alleged to have directly participated in abuse. Now that the stay that was imposed from June to December 2024 has ended, Grant’s attorneys say she is entitled to present a fuller picture of the alleged abuse, including identifying individuals who she says facilitated it.

“While certain facts were available at the time the original complaint was filed, Ms. Grant tried to exercise caution with respect to certain subjects to ensure that her civil suit would not frustrate the DOJ’s efforts,” wrote Grant’s attorneys, led by Ann Callis.

McMahon’s legal team denies Grant’s allegations against him and has stated that prosecutors’ criminal investigation into his conduct has ended without charges. A decision from federal appeals court judges last month seemed to undermine that notion about the status of the investigation when that court referred to the investigation as “ongoing”. One of McMahon’s attorneys last month stated the investigation is finished, “with no ambiguity”. When we asked McMahon’s representatives last month if they had written documentation showing that the criminal investigation had concluded, they didn’t respond.

One of the significant disputes in Grant’s filing is the relevance of the SEC’s findings against McMahon. WWE and McMahon’s attorneys argue that the SEC’s settlement and fines levied this past January were about financial disclosure violations, not the allegations of coercion and sexual abuse at the center of Grant’s case. The defendants contend that the regulatory action has no bearing on whether Grant was forced into signing a nondisclosure agreement under duress. Grant’s legal team disagrees, asserting that the SEC’s order referenced the NDA at issue in her lawsuit as well as McMahon’s efforts to conceal settlements with at least one other woman.

“These facts are material to this Court’s assessment of whether the illegal NDA agreement can be enforced,” Grant’s attorney wrote. “Defendants hope to obscure these facts, or at least avoid having to address them while operating under the Amended Complaint, while using the arbitration clause contained in that illegal agreement as both a sword and shield in this case.”

The defendants have so far strongly pushed to move Grant’s case into private arbitration, citing the relevant clause in the NDA that she signed and that McMahon signed on behalf of both himself and WWE in January 2022.

Friday’s filing also raises information from Grant’s related case in state court in Connecticut involving Dr. Carlon Colker and his clinic Peak Wellness, the medical facility that Grant says McMahon directed her to go to for treatments she alleges she did not fully understand. Grant’s attorneys stated that Colker’s legal team has admitted withholding her medical records, a claim they argue supports her allegations that McMahon controlled multiple aspects of her life, including her medical treatment. Grant’s petition against Colker for records related to her treatment is still ongoing in Connecticut Superior Court.

Callis provided the following statement shortly after this article was published:

“Ms. Grant is grateful and empowered by the support she has received from the community and looks forward to holding Vince McMahon, John Laurinaitis, and WWE accountable for facilitating the sex trafficking and abuse she endured at the company.”

Grant’s lawyers additionally argue that her updated complaint provides greater detail on the alleged coercion she endured, which the court should hear, stating that the amendments serve “to explain the extreme and prolonged abuse Plaintiff was withstanding with greater particularity. The coercion surrounding the agreement and arbitration clause is undeniably relevant to this Court’s assessment of Defendants’” intention to move the case to arbitration.

Among other arguments, McMahon and WWE have insisted that the arbitration clause in the NDA is enforceable due to Grant’s acceptance of the initial $1 million payment, the length of time — two years — she waited between signing the NDA and filing her lawsuit.

Judge Sarah F. Russell will decide whether to allow Grant’s updated 94-page complaint to formally become part of the case or whether to deny her motion and move forward with her original 67-page complaint, filed in January 2024.
